Week 1
Wed. September 6th
- Introduction - mine and students, class/ PROJECTS /grades; goals and expectations
- Intro to visStory (iPhoto)
- Discussion and analysis: Visual language of film, overview:
- Why do we watch? two examples of story...
- What is a story, what is a character?
- Character vs. Plot driven
- Threshold of awareness
- events of the story (visible) vs. structure of the storytelling (invisible)
- Gestalt of Story / Kevin Richardson
- Overview of continuity style of film-making, three act structure, hero's journey
- EX-position, CO-nflict, R-esolution
- anticipation, action, reaction
- Show, Don't tell :
- Visual Storytelling example: Oh Brother where Art Thou
- Example of Drawing Style: Secret of the hidden date by Tamar Blumenfeld.
- Aim for the heart, but work at a structural level
- Two objectives of cinematography:
- Be clear and consistent - do not confuse the viewers. (mannequins example; deep vs. flat shots, when is ambiguous space ok to use ?)
- Enhance the story with cam angles, cuts and visual elements that complement each story point's mood/message. (Yes, once that you know how, you can do fancy stuff to wow viewers.
- However -- Learn and know the rules before deliberately breaking them to your advantage.
- Camera framing ("shot types"): EWS, WS, LS, MS, CU, XCU (Martin Curley) or Ron Doucet's Storyboard Cheat Sheet or Jordan's shots (png).
- "Mom" 12 min animation, time permitting to review shot types. (from Chung Ang University Animation lab, Korea 2016).
- Takeaway points: Make them care. Awareness threshold. Know the rules but pick only the ones that work for you. Storyboarding basics(!)
Week 2
Mon. Sep 11th- Lecture:

- Space (iPhoto) Deep / Flat / (Limited)
- Depth cues: size difference, shape change, perspective/vanishing points, object movement (in/out), camera movement (dolly, push, crane), texture diffusion, aerial diffusion, color separation, overlapping, up-down-near-far from horizon.
- Flat cues: size constancy, minimal perspective, perpendicular obj move, cam pan/tilt (or tracking action), same aerial diffusion, none overlapping, less up-down;same horizontal planes, defocus BG.
- Reversal of depth cues: color separation (warm BG, cool FG), tonal separation (bright BG, dark FG), textural diffusion (less FG, more in BG), size difference (reversal of the expected).
- Ambiguous Space
- Lack of revealing movement, unknown objects size, unfamiliar shapes and patterns, mirrors reflections distortions, cam disorientation.
- Flat vs Deep ---> awkward, comical(?), theatrical, picture-book like vs. exciting , real-life, dramatic :
- Scenes from Moonrise Kingdom (trailer!, cliff dialogue kiss)
- ...vs. the Matrix (lobby shootout)
- Goodfellas sequence with Cam Zoom in vs. Push in (z 2:33-:40, p 3:00-:15 )

- characteristics of the final 2D image we watch (deep? flat? ambiguous?)
- the challenge to portray real world deep 3D on a flat screen (what can we do?)
- Space in production (why for Anim?!)/ same scene in the 3 Spaces (iPhoto, mention forced perspective, Hobbit how to , LOTR how-to)
- Flat vs Deep: theatrical, fairytale, fable, comical-? vs. exciting, dynamic

- Storyboards examples from popular films
- Go to one of the frame still sites from this blog, or others of your choice. Find 5 interesting stills and redraw them in storyboard format, using simple primitives in the composition.
- Continue working on project 2
- Understanding each visual component in its contrast & affinity context, will make it possible to create a more meaningful visual story structure.
- Takeaway pts:
- How do we fake 3D depth on a flat paper?
- When do we choose not to?

Red, the color of the blood that starts the flashback and the opening doors it cuts to, represents birth. Orange is the warm color of his family and the forbidden city. Yellow is the color of the emperor's identity and the sun. Green, the color of the tutor's bike and hat, represents knowledge. The forbidden city only has the first three colors because it is a limited portion of reality.
